PICSEL is a cultural institution built around collective authorship and artificial intelligence. Its inaugural project, The First Manifesto, invites one million participants to each acquire a single pixel on a shared canvas, choose a fragment from eight centuries of art history, and assign a directive that tells AION — an AI system trained on 800 years of visual art — how to synthesize the final work. The result is a painting that no individual authored, no algorithm predicted, and no committee approved.

PICSEL is a seven-campaign cultural institution. Each campaign poses a distinct anthropological question and records, at scale, how one million people engage with it. The First Manifesto asks: What is the impulse that makes a human being want to create something that did not exist before?
